The objective of this assignment is to evaluate pathophysiologic data and diagnostic findings and treatment plans for different types of anemia. Anemia is an umbrella term that includes several different types of a shared condition. The causes of the various types of anemia give clues into diagnosis and treatment. Lab data is an important consideration when evaluating the symptoms of conditions of anemia and can give insight into the effectiveness of treatment.

The following assignment is in three parts.

Part 1: Review of Anemia.

Part 1 includes items 1-3. Responses to Part 1 can be presented in either narrative or table format. Answers in table format can be presented in bulleted text. Tables should include a narrative introduction. All narrative text must be presented in complete sentences. Answer all components of 1-3 and provide rationale for your response.

  1. Types of Anemia: Begin by reviewing the following types of anemia.
  • Iron-Deficiency Anemia
  • Vitamin B12 Deficiency Anemia (Pernicious Anemia)
  • Folate Deficiency Anemia
  • Anemia of Chronic Disease
  • Sickle Cell Anemia
  1. Research and Analyze: For each type of anemia, provide detailed information on the following:
  • Cause/Etiology
  • Presenting Symptoms
  • Diagnostic Findings
  • Treatment Options (Include both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions)
  1. Compare and Contrast: Identify key differences and similarities between the types of anemia reviewed.

Part 2: Review of Labs and Risk.

Part 2 includes items 4 –5. Responses to Part 2 can be presented in either narrative or table format. Answers in table format can be presented in bulleted text. Tables should include a narrative introduction. All narrative text must be presented in complete sentences. Answer all components of 4-5 and provide rationale for your response.

  1. Complete blood count (CBC) and Clotting Times: Begin by reviewing the following serum lab values.
  2. White blood cell count (WBC)
  3. Hemoglobin and Hematocrit
  4. Platelets
  5. International Normalized Ratio (INR)
  6. Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT)
  7. Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT)
  8. Research and Analyze: For each lab value, provide detailed information on the following:
  9. What it is measuring
  10. When it is measured (e.g. for what diagnosis or medication regimen)
  11. What does it mean if it’s high (e.g. what are you worried about if the value is higher than normal range)
  12. What does it mean if it’s low (e.g. what are you worried about if the value is lower than normal range)

Part 3: Patient Case Application.

Part 3 includes item 6. Follow the prompt and provide a narrative response.

  2. Apply your knowledge to a hypothetical case. Choose one type of anemia and recommend one pharmacologic and one non-pharmacologic intervention. Describe how you will evaluate the effectiveness of your treatment. Be specific and provide a rationale for your choices.
