DNP Biostatistics Assignment

Statistical Analysis of a Clinical Question

Objective: To apply biostatistical methods to a real-world clinical question relevant to advanced nursing practice.

Instructions:

Part 1: Define Your Clinical Question (PICO Format)

Develop a clearly defined clinical question using the PICO format (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome).

Example: In adult patients with hypertension (P), how does a nurse-led lifestyle intervention (I) compared to usual care (C) affect blood pressure levels (O)?

Part 2: Select a Dataset

Use one of the following:

  • A publicly available health dataset (e.g., CDC, NHANES, WHO)
  • Simulated data provided by the instructor
  • De-identified clinical data with appropriate IRB clearance

Part 3: Perform Descriptive Analysis

  • Summarize key demographic variables
  • Report measures of central tendency (mean, median) and variability (standard deviation, range)
  • Create at least 2 visualizations (e.g., histogram, box plot, bar chart)

Part 4: Conduct Inferential Analysis

Choose an appropriate statistical test to answer your clinical question:

  • T-test, chi-square, ANOVA, correlation, linear/logistic regression, etc.
  • Justify your choice of test
  • Report the test statistic, p-value, and interpret the result

Part 5: Interpretation and Clinical Relevance

Write a brief discussion (300–500 words) explaining:

  • What the statistical findings mean in the context of your clinical question
  • Implications for nursing practice or healthcare decision-making
