Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to research aspects of a cultural group different from your own. Completing this assignment will help you understand your own ethnicity’s practices. The focus should be on this group’s current experiences in the United States, and how students can practice allyship.

Instructions:

Complete the following steps:

Pick a culture different from your own that exists as a cultural group in the U.S. This may be a different ethnic group, gender identity group, or other group required to receive healthcare in a cultural context different from your own.

Interview a person from your family, friends, classmates, or workplace that belongs to the culture. Contact your instructor if there is difficulty finding a person to interview. Email them for help with identifying appropriate interview subjects.

Research the cultural group using scholarly and credible sources. The individual interview may be used to inform parts of the presentation, but most of the information must be from literature sources.

Create a PowerPoint that presents a cultural overview of the group. Include a title slide, content slides, and a conclusion slide. All slides should include citations in APA format for sources.

Students should collect information using the following questions.

Identifying the Cultural Group

Which cultural group did you research?

Summarize how this group’s identity is different from and similar to your own. Offer 2-3 similarities and differences.

Cultural Treatment

Research the latest demographic data available for this group’s population in the U.S. and your city.

What are the key characteristics of this cultural group, such as language, values, and customs?

How is this group portrayed in the media? Provide a few examples to support your response.

Cultural Oppression

Has this cultural group experienced any type of oppression and privilege throughout colonial American and U.S. history (i.e. 1600s through 1900s)?

What is this cultural group’s current social standing related to oppression/privilege (i.e. their experience in the 2000s)? What is currently being said in the media about this group?

Offer 2-3 strategies on how allies can ally for this cultural group.

After collecting the material, create a PowerPoint Presentation that showcases all the information gathered from the interview and research. Be sure to include references on the final slide.

After creating your slide, you are welcome to cover a challenge from the interviewee when questions about gender, race or ethnicity raised more information.

Presentation Format

Organize your presentation into the following slides in this order:

Title Slide – include the selected culture group’s name, your name, and Galen College of Nursing.

Introduction Slide – summarize your own culture as it relates to the group you’re researching.

Cultural Group Identification – same order as above (i.e., identifying the cultural group, similarities and differences with your own).

Cultural Treatment – demographic overview, key features, media images and examples.

Cultural Oppression – historical and current social status, oppression, and privilege.

Conclusion Slide – Reflect on your findings. Explain how one cultural aspect of this group stood out for you. What insights about yourself emerged as a result of this cultural competence/humility?

Reference Slide – include in-text citations in APA format.
