Practice Dimensions of Multicultural Counseling
Barriers & Communication
Instructions: Complete this week’s required reading in the Sue et al (2019) textbook then answer all three questions below within your TD. After posting your TD, remember to complete the required number of peer responses.
Initial Prompt:
After reading the broaching article,
- explain how (or if) your views have changed pertaining to asking about various aspects of identity (specifically race, ethnicity, and cultural background)? Be sure to explain the why or why not behind your answer(s).
- Where would you put yourself on the scale of comfort with broaching based on the chart provided? How do you feel about where you might be at on the scale and what do you feel could help you to feel more comfortable?
Practice Dimensions of Multicultural Counseling
Choose 3 aspects of identity from the RESPECTFUL model described in the provided materials.
- Discuss how you would explore this with a client.
- Why did you use the phrasing or wording in part a that you did?
- As part of the discussion portion, practice this type of conversation with each other. Choose another classmate (or classmates) and broach 1-2 of these aspects of identity that you have focused on. If you are asked a particular question(s), respond with an honest answer (if you feel comfortable), as well as how you felt about being asked this particular question. Also include any feedback you might have about how the questions were posed. If you do not feel comfortable discussing the particular aspect being asked about, it is okay to communicate this, but please do provide feedback about how the question is being asked.
Check tips on how to do your Psychology Assignments.
Communication Styles:
- Why is kinesics important in therapy? How aware are you of the non-verbal communication constructs as discussed within the textbook, be it within yourself or other people (i.e. talking with your hands, use of eye contact, smiling or frowning, and/or other use of bodily movements)?
- Explain the difference between high context and low context communication. In doing so, detail which of these constructs to demonstrate and/or prefer and why? How do you see this playing out in therapy with those of different communication styles?
