Dimensions of Multicultural Counseling
Affective & Conceptual
Instructions: Complete this week’s required reading in the Sue et al (2022) textbook then answer all three questions below within your TD. After posting your TD, remember to complete the required number of peer responses.
Check tips on how to do your Psychology Assignments.
Initial Prompt:
- How has the information you gained from this week’s readings impacted your thinking about the level of resistance and obstacles that continues to exist when it comes to addressing issues of multiculturalism (in general and in counseling)? What, if any, reactions did you have to the reactions and resistances presented within chapter 1?
- Explain your understanding of cultural universality and cultural relativism. Of these two concepts, which do you gravitate towards and why? What did you think about the introductory dialogue in Chapter 2? Please provide examples, experiences, or sources that help support your opinion.
- Chapter 3 discusses potential challenges that future counselors of color may face. If you identify as a person of color, can you identify with any of the situations presented (over-identifying with a client, etc.)? Are there certain cultural backgrounds or races that might be more difficult to work with because of differing backgrounds? For future counselors who do not identify as a therapist of color, what are your thoughts about these situations?
